Book publishing as a scholarly activity

This talk will share my personal experiences of writing and publishing a book as a scholarly activity. It will cover engaging with publishers, contracts, the writing process, and the benefits and challenges of book writing as an early career academic.

By Nicola Rennie in Conference

As part of the Book Publication as a Scholarly Activity for Statisticians with Teaching-Focused Roles session, organised by Margaret MacDougall on behalf of the RSS Teaching Statistics Section.

This talk will outline my personal experience of:

  • Working and publicising projects that fall outside of the traditional research areas.
  • First contact with publishers, then choosing between publishers and different methods of publishing.
  • Thinking about contracts and licensing.
  • Going from an abstract idea for a book, to actually writing it.
  • The pros and cons of writing a book as an early career academic.
